I just tried the new Niran viewer - that is based on Kristen's. I love Kristen's. I've used that and come up with amazing results almost every time.
Better yet, it seems to be more stable than Firestorm is for me. I get on average, 30 FPS with graphics on high.
Not to mention it looks pretty.

The Crone

So in Westeros (The land that the Song of Ice and Fire is based in) there is a religion called "The Faith of the Seven."
Each one of the Seven gods and godesses lords over a certain aspect, that sort of makes up humanity. In my current RP - I've sent a knight on a quest to learn and experience each of those seven aspects. He requested to begin with The Crone.

I didn't realize it until after the RP began, but my character, a Princess, sent a knight on a holy quest. A bit cliche, but I'm actually quite excited about this RP.

Anyway - The Crone is the Goddess of Wisdom and Guidance. Often depicted as having a lantern to help light the way. After I put this outfit together, I realized how crone-ish it seemed, so felt I should go ahead and blog it for ya'll. Maybe I'll do all seven.

So as usual, I put together and outfit that I really liked, then thought "I'm going to play with this one."

And here you go, just me fiddling with color, actually. All I did was some threshold and contrast. First the original pic -

And this is with minimal touchups (Just getting rid of AV wrinkles, actually.) otherwise, this is a straight snapshot.

Then I accidentally hit the threshold button, when I thought to hit the contrast. As Bob Ross would say, it was a happy little accident, because I rather like the image now.

Aaaannnd now we see the contrast darkened a bit. This was really just me playing around.

So what do you guys think? Would you rather I stick to straight pictures so you can see what I'm wearing, or do you like the artsy photoshopping?

I'm a pretty huge fan of orange - what I'm not a huge fan of is the orange you see in SL most of the time, where it's either so bright you want to stab people, or looks faintly reminiscent of baby poop.
This orange, however, is nice.
I think I did pretty well on the Dornish front, too.

So my character is a Princess of Dorne and modeled a little after Geroge R. R. Martin's character - The Red Viper, Oberyn Martell. She's got a little bit of Arianne Martell in her too, as well as some other bits and pieces thrown in for fun.
All that aside, it's been a challenge to create outfits for a character based on somewhat vague descriptions in books. Dorne has a very Moorish Spain/Middle Eastern feel to me - but it also describes sheer gowns of silk. Needless to say, it's a very wide area for interpretation. I'll be excited to see what it looks like in 3 years when the series gets to it.

Yeah, I know. It's been entirely too long since I've posted here.
It's partially because I've stepped out of Gor - so what's the point in blogging things I don't wear? Well, I've had enough requests from current roleplayers to show off my outfits.

Right now, I'm playing in King's Landing - The Red Keep. The RP is AMAZING. There is so little headache, almost no OOC problems, and everyone is wonderfully mature in helping bring this setting to life.
My character is a Princess of Dorne (Note, this is where I would normally geek out and tell you all about it, but for now, I'll just say - Pick up a copy of A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin and see for yourself.)

I didn't do any post-production on this pic, because I also wanted to show off how nice the new Firestorm release is. My FPS is a bit low with all the picture settings on, but I can easily run with shadows, as well as wear mesh - and still roll in at about 20 FPS.
It's still no Phoenix, but for now, it'll do.

I actually hadn't intended to use this picture, because the angle came out strange... but after last night's roleplay, in which Syedra ended up mostly under water, I felt like I had to. It's a memory now, a picture of Maia on the docks, that will (at least in roleplay) be forever swallowed by the sea. Her outfit is perfect for it now. I was going to drone on about how I'm a bit bored in gored right now, with Elliott gone, and Dreamy moving. However, I just got a really wonderful email from a former director, and now I'm excited and ready to take the next step in my career. (I know, you all secretly watch my blog to hear about my rl, right? I kid. I kid.)

Lemme talk for a minute about this corset though. I'm not sure this, or any picture can do it justice. It's prim and texture work is AMAZING. I had some issues fitting it over muh belleh, but otherwise it's just perfect dahlink. It took me a bit to find a bottom to go with it (although if you're fine with having your cooter hang out, this corset is good on it's own).

All good things must come to an end, however, and I cherish the good times I had there.

In the meantime, I've been checking out other sims. I cruised around Carn the other night and had a pretty good time, and last night went to Torcadino to visit Elle. Cora, of course, was her usual sassy self. I felt like a bad friend when I was making jokes about tiny cups as Elle was getting whipped LOL. Actually half the time I was so into her story, I nearly forgot to post!

I did do some shopping yesterday, and got loads of things. I'm back on my RunoRuno kick. In fact, at least the next two outfits will probably be completely RunoRuno, or have parts. What can I say? Love that chick.

I'm back! Macbeth took a lot more time and energy than anticipated, so I took a two month break from SL. Directly after it closed, I had a three week tour with Romeo and Juliet, so needless to say I was busy.
Now that I'm home and somewhat Shakespeare-free (I'm working on Taming of the Shrew next!) I thought I'd start blogging a bit.

Some of you may know, the play Macbeth is cursed. I didn't quite believe it going in, but I do now. By the end of the run, I had sprained my ankle, severely sprained my wrist (I start physical therapy on it tomorrow), broke my nose, got a minor concussion, and several bruises all over my body. I wasn't even one of the characters that does combat.

Because of these injuries, my time on a computer is limited to how long I can go before my wrist starts hurting so badly that I need barbiturates and a glass of wine just to maintain an air of civility.

On top of this - AR CLOSED! The day I got back, I logged in and seconds later we got the notice. Maybe it's just me that is cursed.

So now I'm somewhat homeless. Oh well. More time to shop, right? Right.

I've been having issues with my viewers. It was only after what seemed like a few hundred uninstalls and reinstalls that I gave up and used what I had. Then I realized something went horribly wrong, and downgraded back to the old viewer I was using. The pictures still aren't quite what I want, but hey, it's a learning process, right?
Now this little number I found at the Dressing Room. I <3 TDR and TDR blue. I've found an outfit that works for gor rp every single time it's opened. They even have skins and makeup for cheap!

These harem pants, are quite possibly the best I've found in SL. They curve down in the back and show just the right amount of booty crack to make it sexy, not trashy. The textures are well done and match beautifully. The best part, is that the outfit costs less than $100L.

Fashion for Life teaser

Dhalia will be released at the ACS Fashion for Life fair. All sales of this color will go directly to the Relay for Life. This gown has a LOT of work. I've been pushing prims on it for over a month. The necklace alone took that long! There are tons of ornate pieces that aren't shown in the picture, I'll try to get a better shot soon.

I don't often participate in charity events in SL, but the American Cancer Society holds a special place in my heart. Many people in my family, including my mother, are cancer survivors. This year, my participation in the Fashion for Life fair holds a special meaning. Since the last time I participated in the fair, I have lost two people to cancer, my grandmother, and my childhood friend, Ryan.

Also in that time, two more loved ones have been diagnosed with cancer. My uncle has liver cancer, and it has developed to the point where we know he is going to die from it, and my best friend told me two weeks ago he is starting chemotherapy for colon cancer. He is turning 28 this month.

I am not telling these personal things on my blog to garner any sympathy, but to make people aware that cancer is no longer some disease that soap opera stars are diagnosed with. It's something that is every day, and becoming all too common.

So please, even if you don't participate in the RFL fashion for life fair, do me one favor - check yourself. Get your yearly exams, do your monthly self exams, take care of yourself and do everything in your power to prevent it. Ya'll mean that much to me, ok?

Burning Through

This isn't one of my best pictures, so sorry for that. It's been a pretty wretched weekend/week for me. I'm attempting to get back into the swing of things, so please be patient if my posts are sparse and not as great.

I've also been pretty busy with preparing for the Fashion For Life fair. (Formerly known as the RFL Clothing Fair).

I've just about finished one outfit that I have been working on for a month, and as soon as I have teaser photos, you'll see them here.

A few words about this outfit - The makeup I rarely wear because it cancels out Cora's epicanthic fold. She's supposed to be of Red Hunter descent. I love the eyeshadow so much, I had to feature it. It would look amazing on anyone else. It's so sexy!

The belt is part of the flute girl outfit at IMP. I've never worn the outfit, I bought it only for the belt. I think I found it during the 25L Tuesday event, which I rarely participate in anymore. I dislike that almost everything in that event has become template carbon copies of things. This belt, however, is obviously not a template, which is why I bought it.

Now, I know I do buy some things that are template - but I buy the ones that are so heavily modified with the creator's own designs that you can barely tell. That kind of template work, I have no issue with.

I was planning on blogging something else - two other outfits in fact, but the moment I tp'd into Tah's Temple I knew I had to change to match the location. The entire sim is so beautiful!

So I wonder, would islands on Gor have embraced the island culture we see on earth?

This little number I think would be perfect for a high slave, on such an island. It has a longer skirt, but it comes with two options - 50% or 70% transparency. The textures are amazing. I can't stop staring at it!

Between finishing a show, and starting another, I've had little time for RP. Unfortunately, a whole war has passed me by and I didn't get to take part in it.
The idea of war in RP is interesting to me. Rarely do we see real consequences of war. What solider in the legions comes home and has a nightmare of slashing a man from navel to chin? How often do we see in play the effects and toll it took on everyone else?
I can understand not wanting to play that out, it is hard, emotional, and potentially damaging to both the characters and our own mental stability, but I wonder still.
I was impressed by the roleplay I read of impaling NPC Tyrosian citizens. You could see the change in focus, when it stopped becoming a playtime friendly game of "slashemup" and the characters took on real personalities. Each and every solider is a son, a father, a brother, a companion, a master, and in theory there is someone waiting at home to see if their love will come back.

The margin of desolation is an area that encircles Ar, where the land and well have been poisoned for pasangs. This makes it difficult for any army to march on Ar, without proper provisions. It was said that during Marlenus' reign, the area was not kept up (meaning things were allowed to grow, etc.). I immediately thought of this area when I was taking this picture. The idea of a barren wasteland, with only a few spry wildflowers, and birds waiting to pick at dead men's bones.

Stiller finally threw down the gauntlet in this post. I've been meaning to blog one of these outfits for a while and just haven't had the time. So you get a two-fer today!

Cora is trained as a dancer. She rarely dances anymore, because 1. She's belted and 2. Her owner is blind (What's the use?) but she is a dancer none the less.
I always imagined dancers wearing outlandish costume type things, to evoke certain responses in what she was dancing that night. Think Gypsy Rose Lee... except perhaps more naked.

Similarly, both these outfits would be good for a display slave, or high slave. Use your imagination!
I want to point out the use of cosmetics. We have a WIDE range of choices now, but so often they aren't used. We *know* that slaves used cosmetics in their favor. Let's see more of it!
In fact, I'll throw down the next challenge - Post an outfit using cosmetics to enhance it. (Remember, free women wore light cosmetics too.) Don't forget to link back!

I adore this for some strange reason. I think it's because even if your owner can't afford to buy jewels and trinkets for you to wear, the idea of a girl slathering herself in paint so she looks done up is one that screams creativity.

Cora would be that girl (and has, in RP). She has a flair for the dramatic though.

I've been so distracted lately with auditions and callbacks I haven't been able to properly shop or think up good themes for my blogs.

I had to force myself out of the tunics (like the one mentioned in my "Winter Blahs" post). I went with something bright and colorful, so much so, that Elliott said I looked like a showgirl.
S'ok. Cora kinda is, as Caelyx said.

I'm still dying for spring, so the hem is a weeee bit short. Following along the rules of every MMO ever, the less clothing you wear, the warmer you are, as long as at least a bit of it has fur on it.

It's become an obsession of mine to put together inventive outfits lately. I'll see something on the feeds, decide I can turn it into roleplay gear, and go for it.
There are a lot of things out there that can be reasonably made in Gor, so why not? A sweater vest that has a low V neck, for instance. The cut of the garment is what is described in the books, and it's reasonable to assume that someone would know how to knit or crochet. But what is going too far?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to start a debate here on BtB vs GE. It's not for me to say what is right or wrong in what other people do with their free time. I personally play on a BtB sim because I enjoy it.
Let me show you what I mean though. Take this outfit for example -

This has all the elements of something a slave would wear.

Collar? Check. Shoulders/arms exposed? Check. Chains? Oh yes, my pretties. Pants? We know now that slaves did wear them, and these particular ones are Japanese style - which we know that culture existed on Gor.

So why do I feel like Cora looks like a fly girl from "In Living Color"? Meh. I still love these pants :D

I do want to start blogging more things that are specifically Gorean. The creators spend a lot of time on their products, and they deserve the recognition.

The Mask

I had lacked an identity. Perhaps we all did.
Roles and masks made do for identities, for realities.
We were all told we were real, of course, but when we inquired as to what we were, we were met with evasive answers; I suppose we were just supposed to know; when we went to touch those supposed realities, our hands passed right through them.
They weren't really there.
If they were truly us, then we, to, were not really there.
We knew we were real somehow, beyond the masks, the roles.
Not everyone wants to disappear behind a mask, or even to hide behind one.
It seemed we were all waiting.
Young, we were supposed to wait.
Reality was around the corner.
Existence and truth must be postponed another day.
And so we waited.
Distracted ourselves with sweets and lies.

But where was the end of this?
Were the older ones real either?
Could it be that the older ones, too, were waiting?
Were they embarrassed to admit this?
Were the parents real?
Had they learned, in their longer lives, secrets they refused to reveal?

It is a terrible thing to look behind a mask and see nothing.
The masks can be voracious.

How many scream, trapped within a mask?
How many do not scream, unaware they have become the mask, that now there is nothing left but the mask?

Winter Blahs

I've got the winter blahs.

It's that thing that comes around every so often, when you've had the millionth snow of the season, and you're ready for some sunshine and flowers. Since I the typist have them, I decided Cora will have them too. She's a bit of a shut-in lately anyway, so it would make sense.

On a completely different note - I got together with some of the other bloggers that do Gor, and asked if they'd like to do some theme projects. Just about everyone is on board, and I am really excited to see what happens with it. I feel like I've made some new friends in the process too. All of the bloggers are so sweet and nice! When talking to Elle last night about the blogger challenges, she said something that stayed in my head "It's all about the pretty pictures."

I do enjoy taking pretty pictures, but lately I've been focusing more on showing off the work of the creators, than the environment and the medium of SL.

I don't like photoshopping things unless they're arty photos. I feel like it's cheating somehow, and especially since this is geared more toward fashion. I do like playing with the windlight settings.

So what do you think? More setting pics with pretty windlight? Or do you like the flat white so the outfit is shown better?

Today I woke up and decided that I wanted to get a new outfit that could work for a number of things.
1. Something that would reflect the status Cora has been put in, as a "Display Slave"
2. Something that was versatile so that if she wasn't really on display, it didn't look stupid when she walked into the tavern and served up some paga.

With that in mind, I dragged Elliott all over the place to find things. Poor guy.
I ended up at LeLOOK! and nearly pee'd myself with happiness. SO MANY PRETTIES IN ONE PLACE.
By far the steal of the day was this bodysuit from Hucci. It's only available at LeLOOK!

Of course I couldn't wear just that (although I really wanted to. It's kinda 80's, but the booteh looks really hot in this.) - it's not quite BtB.
Slaves don't wear panties!
I thought about calling it a variation on a Turian Camisk, but gave up and started searching for a skirt to put over it. Elliott suggested the suede skirt parts for pants, and the cloth belt, like so:

Mission partially accomplished. This worked for half of it... but it wasn't quite display slave-ish.

Later, I went shopping with Cae and Elliott... again... and found a new store (Or new to me) Chain and Vine.

There are some awesome silks there that I'll blog later, but I saw this skirt and knew it would be perfect...

So, with a simple change of the bottom bits, I have an outfit that fits both requirements, and is really cute.

The Ubara's Ball

Today was the Ubara's ball in Ar.
I have to say, in my years of RP in SL, I am having more fun in Ar than I can remember having in a long time.
Melisande has this whole city running like a well oiled machine. She delegates, works hard, and makes sure everyone right down to the lowliest slave in the city feel like this isn't just where we play... it's home. So, kudos to you.
This ball was also a chance for cute little Cora to dress up. I didn't think she'd even go - I mean, she's owned by an old blind man for goodness sake. But, he said "Dress up. We're going. There is free booze."

I've been slacking, I know.. but for good reason! My internet was out the ENTIRE weekend. Today it's thankfully up, and I even logged in to a pleasant surprise.

I got a notecard from a gal wanting some ideas for how to dress a tahari slave. First instinct would be to say something like tribal bellydance outfits and chalwar, no?

Well, the challenge here is that she's wanting something for day-to-day stuff.

Besides - I *hate hate hate* how so many gals will wear dancing silks to do laundry in. Yagottabekiddingme. You don't have to be raggedy if you don't want to, but I'm pretty sure Mastah Big Pants isn't going to appreciate having his well spent money ruined by your cooking chores. Options baby! Options!

I of course, immediately went shopping and found some things. I do so love a challenge.

So first look - which I think I'm going to steal for Cora because it's so CUTE.

This little number is a find. A GOLDEN find, mind you, because not only is it textured beautifully and sculpted well, it's CHEAP. That's right ladies, you too, can own this outfit for....

So my thought for this was that a tahari slave would be wearing things that are somewhat gypsy-ish. Longer skirts, loose fabrics in either dark or light colors, all airy and breathable.

So in my endless quest for clothing that fits this genre of RP, as well as something that you don't see every.freaking.day on some other person, I always find myself coming back to the old standby stores.
Bare Rose is one of those stores. Way too often I feel like I've scoured the market, then I suddenly remember that this place exists, and wonder why I don't shop there all the time.

I don't know why I've been so keen on brown lately. Cora is not a high slave, by any means, but she does have a penchant for flair.
I have found that a good way to roleplay to get more clothing, is to tear up your owner's "old" clothes and make new clothes out of them. Eventually they will be upset at this, and get you new things.

Another note on that subject - Cora is owned by a tavern master. She's not a paga girl, but her station certainly isn't one of wealth. So what to wear? It wouldn't make sense to wear dance silks all day long, so really she'd wear them only occasionally.
She'd also not have the nicest of fabrics in her other clothing.. but she's not a pot and kettle girl either. Despite past popular belief, dirty is not so cute.
I suppose my recent shift to tunics in muted natural colors is a way to compensate for this. You can be "low" looking, without being dirty and raggy.

Again I've got a dress on that I feel is very much in the spirit of the novels, but also a mainstream store. Just because it's not labeled "Gor" doesn't mean it's not workable! Free Women have been doing it for years!

That's right, Slaves can wear pants!!!!
So here we are, enough to keep you toasty warm, but still shows plenty of skin and your shapely figure to boot.

Gigi is a three piece outfit. The top is made up of two knits in contrasting colors, a cable knit and the standard ribbed knit. The excess fabric drapes off the back and over the collar, and there is even a belt made up of the ribbed knit, to add a little flair.
Under this, are a pair of warm leather pants, worn down and wrinkled and sure to keep your knees from getting funky from all that kneeling on the cold ground.

Again with the greek thing, eh? Ismene is Oedipus' youngest child, the sister of Antigone. I've been so busy lately producing a play about Ismene I haven't had much time to design. I guess I have it on the brain.
The quote is from the play Antigone, by Sophocles. It's where Ismene is trying to convince her older sister to back down, and respect their uncle, Creon.
It's a soft velvet gown, with a satiny insert. The waist is hugged by a delicate fleur de lis belt. The simple design is modest, and can work for multiple roleplay areas.

We moved!
A couple of our friends on Plurk got homestead sims. Naturally, Dream and I were /jealous, so we talked it over for a few agonizing weeks, and decided we were making enough in our stores to justify getting a whole sim for them.

If you haven't heard, my photoshop went tits up, so I've had to learn teh Gimp. It's got the same basic tools (and some new ones I haven't seen before) but it's still very different. It's taking some time to get used to, but I'm learning fast, and my designs are taking on a whole new flair.

Tis been too long, my dearies.
Real life has kept me super busy - my baking business is finally taking off!
On top of that, I've been having issues with my computer and photoshop. So to calm my creative itch, I fired up GIMP and made a simple tunic.
Well... simple AND sexy.

I got the idea in my head to make robes of concealment with ruffles. Dunno why, but it was there. So I ran with it.
This dress ended up having a asian flair to it, which I kinda like. The lighter fabric is linen, with silk accents. It seemed like the perfect springtime dress for a young free woman.

Gettin back into my groove here. I just moved back to Illinois from California, so I will hopefully have plenty of time to expand my line. The first part I'm working on is getting more gowns out.
So here.. is Ella.

Syngen, my good friend and creator of Sakinah and I were chatting while I made this. I sent her a pic and said "Look, I've made a princess gown." She laughed and said I should name it Ella, from Ella Enchanted. So I did!

It's made of soft silk duiponi, gold brocade, sweeping swags of fabric and to top it all off.. a scarf on the head as well as a crown. I got that idea from the costumes of Atia from HBO's Rome.
Hope you like it, it's my best one yet!

I've been slackin in updating this blog, I know!

So the fantastic 4 and I (Dream from Fantasia, Delora from Haven, and Talyn from Analise) were goofing off as usual, when we tossed the idea around about making something fun.. something that might not be usable in roleplay, but first and foremost.. something fun for ME to make.

Here in the Bay, there is a huge rockabilly culture. Car shows, pencil skirts, red lipstick and pompadours abound. I've also been watching the movie "Cry Baby" by John Waters quite a bit. It inspired me to do something pinup-esque.

So here you have.. Bloom.
I'm so proud of my work here. I can skim over this blog and amaze myself in how far I've gotten with my skills. It took me nearly three years, but I've done it. All of this is hand painted!
I hope you like it as much as I liked making it.

Oh la la!

I caught the bug I guess. I just can't stop making stuff. Even when it never turns into an outfit in SL.. there is something amazingly relaxing about zoning out and painting in photoshop.

However, my life has taken a turn for the strange again - I will try as hard as I can to keep putting new things out, but no promises.

For now, here is Nectar. A sweet little camisk that's slightly see-through, complete with peek-a-boo cutouts, and a darling little gold waist chain. The chain has a sun charm on it!

Relay for Life!

I know it's been a while since I've put something new out, but for good reason! The Second Life Relay for Life clothing fair is almost here, and I joined up.
It was my first year, and wow.. was it a lot of work. It was worth it though.

The theme this year was Pirates. I couldn't bring myself to make yet another pirate costume, so I twisted the theme. I thought to myself... why not the Odyssey? The epic pirates!

So first up.... Penelope. The dutiful wife, who waited for years for her love to come home.

"'Before the end my heart was broken down. I slumped on the trampled sand and cried aloud, caring no more for life or the light of day, and rolled there weeping, till my tears were spent.'" Book 4, lines 574-77

Circe - for the panther girls. The Goddess with a broken heart, who could only be tamed in Love.

"....So that in love and sleep we may learn to trust one another."

Lotus - after the lotus eaters. I thought it looked so sweet and innocent... for that rustic, young, free woman.

And finally.. Scylla. A red savage inspired slave garb. I used a quote about sirens here.. because a friend of mine said that if he could choose a nickname for me, it would be Siren.
Why?

Aww.. how sweet. Except for the death thing.

Vixen.
This one took me nearly a month to make. I've been so busy lately with jobs, home life, etc. I finally made time to finish these, and I'm pretty happy with the result.
The waistband of the skirt is sculpted chain links. Sculpties stretch and form well around many shapes, so I've been using them as much as possible.
The chain links were a last minute thing, but it turned out to be perfect.

After a long break from SL, I'm back!

I've been enjoying my time in the lovely city of Ti, and made some new friends who gave me some awesome tips on making clothing.
I also heard from some slaves that they were tired of the ratty camisks. They wanted something a little more clean cut, but still not "princessy"
So, here you go!
Diligence - a draped camisk that falls in all the right places, cinched with a belt of wooden beads.
Only 200L - it comes in four colors, Rust, Cream, Green and Teal.

If you haven't guessed by now, I have an almost unhealthy obsession with mythology.

I've been swamped lately. A new job in RL, moving from Treve, starting up Tyros... with all of that, creating clothing was just too much on my plate.
Thankfully, now that things have settled, I was able to take a day to flex my creative muscles and make something.

Aurora is the goddess of the dawn. New beginnings, especially fiery ones. So far, 2008 has been a year of new beginnings for me. A lot of them. My life has made a complete 180 degree shift, and all for the better.

One of the girls in Tyros, who has been named "bina" suggested I make something for the handmaidens, or tower slaves of Gor.
Something obviously a little more modest, as they're slaves to Free Women in most cases.. but still blatantly slave wear. We both agreed a toga of sorts would be interesting, and this was the result.

Man. I love the way this looks. I even made Miranda wear it today (She was more than happy to oblige) just because I wish I could wear it all day long. I would almost become a slave just to wear this.
It's elegant, and sinful, all at the same time. The sides are completely open, so you can catch just enough of a glimpse of the curves of your body.

Everything seems to be Greek themed lately, and I'm happy to note that this could be worn in RP areas outside of Gor.

I'm seriously considering making a "toga" line, named after different goddesses. I promise I won't wait three months before making something new again.

The process, Part Two

Now, onto the headache.
From our drawing, we get a rough idea of what we want.. really rough.
As I mentioned in my previous post, it gets a little more complicated when you're fitting it to a 3D model.
Let's talk about programs first.
I use a number of programs, but I'll simplify it here as much as possible.
To do the basic template, which we're discussing in this post - I use Paint Shop Pro.
Why?
To put it simply, the pen tool is easier to use, and I like that you can zoom in with the mousewheel.
That's pretty much it.
It's also a little easier to fill with a pattern than in Photoshop.
If I'm creating the pattern from scratch, I use photoshop the whole way, but to make things quicker, and by fault, easier, Paint Shop Pro is the way to go.

First, bring up your templates that you can find on the forums, I use Chip Midnight's
I can't live without the shading guides and the seam labels haven't done me wrong.
Click on the pen tool, and make sure "show nodes" and "connect segments" is checked at the top.
Keep the background color black, it leaves just a hint of an outline of black when you fill in the color, and leaves a cleaner line (in my opinion)
Click away!
Yes, it's that easy, you just connect the dots pretty much.. but here comes the first obstacle.. The boobs.

I started on the shoulder pieces, I always find it's easier to work in segments and move from top to bottom. The shoulder strap starts thin, then opens up to cover more as it lowers.
As I go from the shoulder, I realize the obvious place to put my next little box is right where the armpit is. See those triangles at the sides?
Stay away from them unless you either:
a. Are using sleeves
or
b. like looking like you've bled fabric into your armpit

So I move down a little bit, but uh oh, I don't want to go too low and end up showing nip. I pick the bar closest to the arm and settle for it. I trace my line back up to the shoulder and.. OH NOES! The line isn't how I wanted it to look. It's a broad strip remember? This is just kind of a wisp of fabric.

That's okay, just make it broader at the bottom, and cover more of the boob, right?
Nope.
Well.. I could I suppose, but what everyone always forgets, is that when you put something over the boob as far as a texture goes, it stretches. I'm using leather for this, so the more I have just one thing over the boob, the better. If I use this particular strip to cut it in half basically, I'll end up with a seam that looks like it's busting worse than a fat lady in Givenchy.

Time to alter the plan!

Remember when I said "Don't be afraid to draw"?
It goes here too. Sometimes your plan doesn't work, but if you just keep drawing, you end up creating something even neater than you intended.
After about five minutes of random clicking and repositioning I came up with this:
Just switch all those vectors to rasters, and there you go, your very first template!

oh, and did I mention, SAVE?!

Fill in the holes with separate layers (more pen tool)
That way it'll be easier to fill when it comes to fabric filling.
I won't post a picture of it, because it'll just look like blackness on a template.

Next up, fabric picking!!!
For this, we're going to look for fabrics, so fire up your internet explorer, and search google for "Stock Photos" or swatches. Check the copyrights on it!! If it's not free to use, don't use it!

The process, Part One

I began my trek as a virtual designer nearly two years ago. In the grand scheme of things, I suppose it's not that long, but I can look at my first works and my present works and just be amazed.
There are a few things that have helped me along the way. On the technical side, hands down other designers blogs and the SL forums have helped the most.
I am working on a new line of clothes, and I thought.. time to give back.
So here you are, the first part of a series of blogs while I make something. I'm hoping an insight into the design process will help whoever may read this create more.

My first steps in the design process is to draw it out. Pencil and paper. I prefer charcoal pencils because they smudge nicely. Most of the time I sit down on the couch, and just draw. I watch TV, see what people are wearing, and pay attention. I can't stress that enough.
Ask yourself some questions:
1. What are the main colors I see?
2. Are there a lot of layers?
3. Is there an Era of fashion (ie 30's 40's 80's) that seems to stand out?
4. What sort of lines are there?
- Lines - In fashion, if you look at an outfit you can see the silhouette or "lines" of an outfit. Is it really angular? Soft? Flowing? rigid? sharp?
5. What sort of fabrics? Light? heavy? rough? soft?

Then on to the drawing itself. Normally I draw 4-5 separate things before picking one thing to focus on and work from. My drawings and designs evolve. I start with a doodle, then go on and take pieces of that doodle and move forward. Pick out the pieces you like, throw away the rest. Keep adding and taking away. This process doesn't stop when you stop drawing, it's all the way through.

Drawing One - For some reason I always lean toward drawing gowns first. I guess it comes from when I was a kid and drew princess gowns. Yes, I was that little girl. I sketched this out after watching an old 40's movie. I liked the angles of it. The strong lines, the hardness of the shape and silhouette and the thought of using really soft feminine fabrics for it.

Drawing Two - I liked the lines, but I thought it was maybe too much. I softened it up here, added in softer accessories. The contrast of what I wanted as feathers over the breast and eventually leather for the rest of the top would have covered it. It's a definite possibility for the future, but I wanted to keep going.

Drawing Three - I wanted to focus more on the actual lines, and maybe detail. I started on this, and realized halfway through it was a corset. Corsets to me are just.. overdone. I still kept the same lines, the cutting and stitching, or patching fabric over at least one side of the chest. Rough next to soft, and sharp angles.

Drawing Four - The more I looked at the rough vs soft, I thought I'd go to the other extreme from my second drawing. I wanted something really harsh. The strips of leather, some fishnet, maybe some sheer fabric to cover the holes, sharp evident stitching and cut up lines. Then below it.. a nice, knit soft khaki straight leg pant. It's like Tim Burton meets a Stepford Wife.

Drawing Five - It's always best to focus on one piece first, usually the hardest then the second piece (ie the pants) so I went straight for the shirt. I cleaned up the lines, added more shading and slightly more detail. I changed the structure a little, and I have a feeling I'll have to change it more soon. A shirt may look fine flat, but when put on a body it changes. You have to change your design to cover SL flaws, or stretching.

So there you have it.
Next will be creating the "template" for the design. It'll get technical there, so I hope I can do it justice.
Lastly, just a few words of advice:
Don't stop drawing. The more you draw, the better you are. Look at my sketches.. I suck at it. But, It's leaps and bounds from drawing stick figures, right?
Don't be afraid of drawing either. So your shirt comes out and it looks horrible. Oh well, you wasted 10L on an upload. The important thing is that you did it. It may sound corny, but it's true. 90% of people in SL wouldn't even try.
and my #1 piece of advice -
It won't happen overnight.

This was FUN to make.
I always read other designers blogs and they always say that. "This was so much fun to make" I never understood what they meant until this set.

For the very first time, I made something completely from scratch.
Usually, I get an idea in my head about what to make, then look for fabric swatches in stores in SL or on the net.
From that, I paint it in, and add embellishments. (wrinkles, jewels etc)
Not this one.
I promised myself that someday, someday I would learn to make it all by myself.. and I did.
For my birthday my mother got me some books on photoshop, specifically painting and creating fabrics. I couldn't wait to try it out, to see what would happen and well, here you go.

I made this set for a few reasons. I've been really into everything greek lately. Not only that, I'm so tired of every silk I see being a bikini top and some prims over your bottom. So, I thought about Sirens. In truth, they screamed, but their voices were so sweet to men's ears, they couldn't help but listen.
Again with the greek theme, I've been renamed Helen of Treve. I seem to have the tendency to start wars. *ducks*

Happy Thanksgiving!!
I know, I've been slacking in the work department.
I think it's the change of weather, but every time I start a project, I can't seem to finish it. I have about three sets of silks that are half done.

Not to mention, in role-play, Treve is doing really well. Most of my time has been devoted to it, and it's citizens. I don't mind it much, most who know me know I don't work in RL, so Treve, and of course the Elements shop has become my job.

So Lexi has been bugging me to make free women's gowns. I've been trying for ages, and I just couldn't do it. There is just so much fabric!! Everything I did either came out ugly or looked too busy. I couldn't find a good balance of color and design.
Treve has just finished a war with Port Kar. We won of course :P
But, during all of this, I thought about those fierce pirates and captains of Kar. Some of which are women. If I were a captain, I'd totally wear this.

And of course, today is Thanksgiving. I woke up late, and by the time I got to my mother's house everyone was ready to eat. The meal was fantastic, and my sisters were there with their children.
The highlight of my day was holding my three month old niece, and seeing her smile. (She just figured out how.)
She giggled (more like drooled) and grinned when I tickled her.
There is just no greater joy than holding a happy baby.
When I got out to my car to leave, my sister asked about the business and said she'd been checking my blog, but hadn't seen anything.
So of course, I got to work, and here is the result.. named after my niece.. Ayla.

I'm addicted to Ylusive Surface's veils. Her shop is called "Beyond the Veil" and the link to her blog can be found on this page.
I was looking at her work the other day, and noticed her fine lace textures. That, and in my endless quest to improve my painting and photoshop abilities, I found a great tutorial by Robin Wood, on how to create good lace textures.
I tested it out, and thought - this would make a neat babydoll set of silks.
So here it is, Ravished.
Rather than me picking the colors for you, or you buying 6 different sets, I made this set in white, and moddable, so you can change the color easily to any that you like (or your master likes :P)
This is also scripted, so if someone clicks on it, they have the option to rip, tear, cut, or slide the lace off of you. How neat is that?!
My long time buddy Drake Suplee scripted it for me, so if anyone wants a copy for themselves, or their work, feel free to message him about pricing! (he also makes neat furniture - Shameless plug, I know.)

Lexi, my bestest friend didn't want me to make panties for it. Oh well, If you don't like em, you don't have to wear them, the outfit looks fine either way!

I wanted to create a Turian style Camisk.
The description of them in the books is somewhat vague, and hard to understand.

"The Turian camisk, on the other hand, if it were to be laid out on the floor, would appear somewhat like an inverted "T" in which the bar of the "T" would be beveled on each side. It is fastened with a single cord. The cord binds the girl at three points, behind the neck, behind the back, and in front at the waist. The garment itself, as might be supposed, fastens behind the girls neck, passes before her, fastens between her legs, and is then lifted and, folding the two sides of the "T's" bar about her hips, ties in front. The Turian camisk, unlike the common camisk, will cover the girl's brand; on the other hand, unlike the common camisk, it leaves the back uncovered and can be tied, and is, snugly, the better to disclose the girl's beauty."

So, this is the result.
I have been aching to use silk textures again, but I had an overwhelming cry for more burlap and rough textures.

Not to mention the silk textures on this design made me think of the 80's. I can just imagine slaves running around with a can of Aquanet.

The belt is pure fun. I toiled for days thinking about what to put around the waist. Then I thought about what a kajira would have available, and why wouldn't she use an old belt her master had thrown away?

Just looks cute to me, and against the white camisk looks almost 60's ish.

I'm so tired of paying a ton of money for silks.
